NEP 2020: UGC will provide training to 15 lakh higher ...

The UGC has policies and guidelines for faculty training, primarily through its Human Resource Development Centres (HRDCs). These include mandatory Faculty Induction Programmes (FIPs) for new faculty within one year of joining, and regular Orientation Programmes (OPs) and Refresher Courses (RCs) for in-service teachers, covering pedagogy, research, technology, and curriculum design. These programs are crucial for career advancement under the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) and align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

  • Faculty Induction Programme (FIP):
    • Purpose: To familiarize new faculty with teaching methodologies, curriculum development, assessment techniques, and university regulations.
    • Mandatory: It is mandatory for all newly appointed teachers in universities and colleges to be completed within one year of their appointment.
    • Organizers: Organized by UGC's HRDCs and universities under schemes like the Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT).
    • Orientation Programmes (OPs) & Refresher Courses (RCs):
    • Purpose: Specifically designed for both new entrants and serving teachers, focusing on aspects like pedagogy, educational psychology, philosophy, socio-economic concerns, and Information Technology.
    • Frequency: Serving teachers are expected to attend an OP or RC every three to five years.
    • Prerequisite: An OP is a prerequisite for admission to an RC.
    • Duration: OPs are typically three weeks, while RCs are two weeks.
    • Career Advancement Scheme (CAS):
    • Role of Training: Attendance and completion of these programs (FIP, OP, RC) are considered for promotion to senior grades under the CAS.
    • Professor of Practice:
    • Industry-Academia Link: The NEP 2020 emphasized integrating vocational education and strengthening industry-academia collaboration.
    • Training for Industry Experts: The UGC has released guidelines for engaging "Professors of Practice," bringing real-world practices and experiences into classrooms and augmenting faculty resources.
